Sutherland's discusses this, at least in some older editions. Old Stronglight and TA axles differ in taper length and angle from Campy and clones. Stronglight and TA cranks can bottom out on Campy and clone axles. So for old Stronglight arms, you need Stronglight, TA or the appropriate Phil Wood axle. There is another option, as at least one older Sutherland's pointed out. A JIS axle will work with Stronglight arms, although it will position the cranks a mm or two farther from the BB than a Stronglight axle of the same length. I've used this tip many times by using a JIS BB with Stronglight cranks.

Not sure the noise from the BB is necessarily an axle taper issue. Could be the result of mixing an axle of one make with cups of another, use of the wrong bearing size, misadjustment, dirt or just plain wear.

Re: OEM installation - Stronglight BB & Type 93 Crank; 1974 Raleigh Super Course Mk II

Normally, I would have assumed the spindle taper was common and appropriate for just about every crank under the sun with exception, perhaps of JIS. Yet, every time I poke this Stronglight bb it makes unique noises, not like any other bb I've serviced. (This is my first Stronglight). So, as a precaution, I am investigating the spindle taper.

Is there anything special about the Stronglight spindle taper requiring Stronglight-only cranks or, can an array of cranks fit the spindle - Campag, Ofmega, TA, Raleigh badged SR, Gipemme, Zeus, etc.?? (Well maybe not Zeus; that could be bizarre, too.). The other side of the coin is how to redploy the Stronglight 93 crank - one will have to know the spindle requirements.

Be nice if one of the tool companies made a set of GO/NOGO gauges for spindle taper.

Thank you.
