Long story short: 2 years ago I began to overhaul my '87 Ritchey
TimberComp. I immediately ran into roadblocks, couldn't find
replacement parts, and the LBS just kept trying to get me to buy a
new bike from them instead. You know the story\u2026
It was a frustrating and circuitous path that led me to buy an
Atlantis, but I ended up here. Along the way I bought a nice Fuji
Junior to bring back to life as my first 'restoration' project for my
soon-to-be 7 year-old daughter. It's going to be real nice when I'm
done with it. The frame is in very nice shape, components are nice
too, paint is OK, but that's not important. Only the seatpost bin der
at the top of the seat tube appears to have been over tightened. No
big concern here...a little bit of rust just there.
In the meantime, I have a question regarding the Fuji Jr.
I'm not sure now if the front hub is original. It's a cheap Sunshin e
36H Q/R hub, and one of the cones is mangled. So, I'm searching
for a replacement cone, full axle set, or replacement hub
(whichever is easiest).
Initially I assumed the hub was original. At least I don't think it' s
ever been opened before because of the condition of the grease I
found in it. But I read something on this list or the iBOB list that
now makes me think otherwise. You see, it's quite a struggle to
spread the forks of that little Fuji apart enough to get that hub to
fit between the dropouts. Initially I thought that maybe the fork
blades had been pressed (squished) together sometime in the little
bike's 25-30 year-old history. But I've taken the fork out and it' s
straight and aligned, and there's no sign of stress in the paint.
Now I'm wondering if the bike was actually spec'ed w/ a narrower
hub. The forks measure 88mm between the inside of the dropouts.
Is there such a thing as a 'narrower' hub? Does anyone know if
junior road bikes (24" wheels) were equipped with narrower hubs?
Anyway, here are some photos of the mangled cone and the hub. If
any of you have a cone, full axle set, or replacement hub that you
think will fit, please let me know. The axle is a 9x1. The overall
length of the good cone is 10mm (maybe 10.5ish mm - it's hard to
tell). The overall diameter of the cone is 15mm. And the diameter
of the dustcover is 20mm.

Oh, and does anyone know where I can find more info out about
the Fuji Junior? The searching I've done so far on the web hasn't
been fruitful.
