Jeff, you did good, and you'll enjoy the beauty of that particular paint and decal job for a long time to come. I have an '80 with that color and layout (but much poorer condition), and I really enjoy looking at it, in addition to riding it. I guess Effective Cycling would say you shouldn't have a pretty bike because then you won't watch traffic!

I imagine a full restoration of my bike would top the BIN price!

Especially don't inspect the seatstay tops while riding!!

Hi Jeff,

Congratulations! It is a beautiful and special bike, and I think you bought it right. $3,500 would have been too high (right now, that is), but $2,950 seems like a fair price. As you read yesterday, several people on this list think it's already worth $3,500. And the truth is you wouldn't have been too wrong buying it for the BIN price, but it's nice to save $550 and still get the bike, so I say well done.

I'm sure you'll really enjoy riding it and owning it, and on top of that, if you sell it, you won't lose any money on it. In that respect, in order to maintain or enhance its long term value, I would suggest the following:

- Make a digital and a print copy of the auction listing, and take photos of the bike when you get it.

- Save copies of the posts from yesterday, especially the Brian Baylis and Chuck Schmidt "testimonials."

- Try to document its full history. Chuck would be a good starting point for this since he is a previous owner.

- Try to maintain the bike as original as when you get it. Even if you come across a Masi panto ring that would look great on it, don't put it on this bike.

- When you ride it, do so with different wheels, pedals and saddle. You may even want to consider swapping the whole stem/bar/lever assembly. Also very important, try very hard not crash the bike :)

One thing I'm not sure about is whether you should have the fork scratches touched up, or have the whole fork resprayed, or leave it as is. Some people would say that the scratches are now part of the bikes identity. Personally, I'd have them professionally touched up. Let us know what you decide to do.

As for the clammy feeling, three more Guiness will take right care of that!

I really didn't want to spend over $2500, but I got to reading all the CR list postings, started thinking about the 3ttt Masi Bars and Faliero panto stem, then made the mistake of drinking three Guiness at dinner. The E-bay bidding process got the best of me. Now my hands and feet are kind of clammy. I'm way, way, way over Ray Dobbins "10 bike limit".

I could really use some "at a boy's" and "you did good's" from CR listers right about now. Not cheap at $2950 but well under the "buy it now" price. A piece of bicycle history, and hey, it's definately my size.
