Joe's right. Edco made a threadless BB axle/bearing unit that cammed itself in place by means of eccentric cups. Not to be confused with a tandem eccentric, these went in normal single bike BB shells.
I installed on once, but for another rider (never rode it myself), and I can't remember whether they were considered reliable or not.
