Except for that stainless steel housing with no sheath or plastic covering, which is only for shift cables, there is no difference in the housing for brakes or gears in old bikes....

Now, at a certain point (slipping outside our time line) slippery plastic lined cable housing came into use. But this was also used for shifting and braking interchangeably...

Mitch: Thanks. STI = Indexed shifting, yes?

What of friction shifting before indexed? This pre-index era type is that of which I am curious and forgetful.

The metal in the STI housing runs lengthwise, longitutinal, to minimize compresion caused change in length. Brake housing hand a single fatter spiral metal wire that is orientd sort of across the direction of the housing.

How does one identify which of that loose & lay-about housing is which? I thought the metal coil was different but, I do not remember the details. No, I don't have definite bits I can use to compare. I apologise for this remedial question; just having a memory lapse.

Thanks.
