Thanks to all who assisted. I am fortunate to be among so many good people.

The task was interrupted; hence, the delay in the follow-up. All is well. Summation below.

1) Firstly, chain length. In the trial and error of adding and removing links, I am not sure what the final sum is - more, less, same; however, I think one link more has been added. Chain length was set using the large-large method. Feels much better - less stress in the drive train. 2) Secondly, efficiency of gear change. Note: This is in the work bench and not road test (yet to do). The Huret Challenger (OEM on the Raleigh Super Course Mk II) seems to like slightly faster revolutions to move the chain onto the 28t cog (largest of a 5p cogset). My only experience (read "muscle motor memory") is of Campag and Suntour which have shifted at slower speeds. When I turned the gear train at a slightly highter rate (and the one additional link), the Huret Challenger shifted just fine even to cross-chaining.

So, again - Thanks to all.

Got pics of the bike? I'm a bit of a SuperCourse fan... in fact, I'm sorely tempted by a early 70s I've seen locally, that has all original parts... I believe even the tires are original. And it's in great shape... damn, I need a bigger shed.
