LACTIC LIES? For decades, endurance athletes have been told to concentrate on doing workouts at an effort just below their "lactic threshold," which is the point beyond which lactic acid begins accumulating in the muscles. It is/was widely held that lactic acid is a waste product that hinders performance if allowed to build up. According to George A. Brooks, a professor in the department of integrative biology at U.C. Berkeley, that's all wrong. Dr. Brooks argues that lactic acid is actually an important fuel. At this link to a New York Times story you can read why he believes this to be the case: http://tinyurl.com/o5s3a ''
