I bought a Model 300 in the early 1970's when I was wrenching at Precision Cycle in Putnam Connecticut. We sold Merciers, Jeunets, and Raleighs. Merciers came from Beacon Cycle in Boston. (Nick Z, my old boss was Bob Van Haagen, you may remember him he recently passed away). I put about 500 miles on the Mercier and then put it in my basement. It's still in my basement, original bar tape and all. Here's what I got around 1973 or so:
Reynolds 531 double butted frame, front and rear forks. Chromium plated half front fork and stays (chrome is going). Simplex forged rear dropouts, stamped front dropouts. Nervex "pro" fork crown, Bocama "Professional" short point lugs. Simplex Criterium front and rear gear changers, rear changed later to a Super LJ. Simplex LJ frame mount shift controls, the metal levers with the plastic covers. Normandy SPORT Dural QR large flange hubs, Atom QR. Stronglight headset. Stronglight 93 crankset, 45x52. Simplex cable clips. Lyotard Dural platform rattrap pedals. Chrome steel seat post. MAFAC brakes with white half-hooded levers and adjusters. Atom freewheel 14 x 24. Sedis chain. AVA alloy rims. Butted spokes. Hutchinson tubular sew-up racing tires. Crappy quilted vinyl covered plastic "racing" saddle (gone, replaced with one of those neato drilled Unicanitor plactic ones). Pivo alloy bars and stem. Dural pump with hose (gone). Clamp-on pump clips. Christophe Special toe clips and straps. Color: Kelly Green Frame Size: 25", said so on carton, but it measures 23.5" or so. 75 degree head angle, great fast handler and very light.
