Peter Weigle wrote an excellent article in a recent VBQ about carving lugs. It's a good read. Try to ignore the homely chap in the photos. I use similar tools and techniques as in the article. In addition to that if the design requires I use jeweler's saws and files. I'm sure others have other techniques.
