You tell ‘em Charlie,

Let me be the first to acknowledge how truly lucky we are to be joined by someone who has forgotten more about bikes than is known by the likes of Brian Baylis. I took a moment to review your previous contributions, and noticed that you didn’t provide the customary introduction. I, and I’m sure many other list members, would love to know how you came about your deep knowledge of vintage bicycles. I grew up not far from Baltimore, but oddly enough I don’t recall ever hearing of you as a frame builder, racer, shop owner, club officer, federation official, collector, or in any other context. But who am I?

I want to thank you for your contributions to date. That what I thought was a late 1980’s Gios Compact might actually be an “early time trial bike” is a revelation. Kudos on your insights regarding the appropriateness of a Pletscher rack on a rare constructeur bike.

Thanks for not boring us with BS about frame geometry and “delving too much into the history of things.” After all, this list is about preserving old bikes. Dale might disagree, but like you said, “look at the source.” Oh, and bravo on the whole “whizzard” jab… or do you know enough about Brian to see your own double entendre?

Remember, there’s room on CR for everyone, from the snobbish to the arrogantly ill-informed.

Best regards,

you tell 'em george....i've been reading for less than a month and

basicly a few guys quibble w/ each other over BS.... this snobbish behavior of a few detracts from the intention of an open forum about the preservation of old bikes....i've saved a few old rides from the trash man and put them on the road again, mostly to the local art students who scan craigslist looking for something unique to ride....not alot of questions about frame geometry....more about

the color and rarity.....alot of what i read here is a big fat

bore....but ya know, those guys don't care...they are in their own little world thinking they're orbiting somewhere above everyone else....NOT. when it comes down to the these whizzards, i remember that i've forgotten more about BIKES (fixin 'em, ridein 'em, knowin 'em) than these guys ever knew. in the future i'd look at the source and head for the delete button.....all power to the pedal george...charlie flaherty in baltimore maryland
