Subject: [CR]Flats on axles

Why do old British hubs have flats on their axles?

The round part of my Bayliss-Wiley rear axle fits nicely in the Cyclo dropouts on my old Hobbs. The flats make a sloppy fit.

There must be some logic, but it escapes me.
