I own a very similar-looking chrome Herse [see http://www.classicrendezvous.com/Events/Cirque/Cirque_06/Bike_show_swap/photos/photo31.html ], same (or close) vintage, I believe, as Alexander’s. I can’t speak to every Herse, but I can attest to fact that every detail on my bike appears very carefully thought out. If it looks like there is extra material somewhere, it’s for a reason, most certainly not because of “sloppy work.” The “extra” material around the brake cable entry and exit points on my bike has been very carefully and neatly done, not “gobbed,” and I’m sure adds strength to potentially weak areas. Herse bikes have achieved their status for a reason!
