The Elan oval rings were made by Cyclo - They I think have marks on them which can be aligned with the crnk. Essentially the smallest diameter part of the ring is at TDC and BDC - the idea of the ring was to smooth pedalling out through the parts of the crank rotation when the foot and leg was able to exert least effort.
