Wasn't it even worse than that in fact? I seem to remember it was 5/16" in the rear and 1/4" in front, requiring you to carry not one but two extra allen wrenches, in sizes most bikies don't even own.

Oh well, the hubs were pretty much godlike, so at least the allen wrench annoyance wasn't for nuthin'. I built a lot of tandems and a few track bikes with those, forgiving them that one flaw. I remember one tandem I built that absolutely HAD to have Phil Wood hubs, because it was made for Mr. Phil Wood. He insisted on no cantilevers or other brake accommodations other than the F&R Phil disks (Yikes!) It was meant to be a show bike for showing the hubs & brakes at the Interbike show - not sure if he actually rode it.
