I dug up two good-quality color pics of Eddy (one a postcard and the other a mini-mini poster), as well as the January 2005 edition of Cycle Sport America, which has a special Merckx section with lots of great pics. Then I grabbed my large magnifying glass, sat under a good light and went to work.
After VERY CLOSE inspection of the photos, I have concluded the following:
- the milling in Eddy's posts were generally painted black - the milling in his stems is generally orange or black, but I think orange was used more often - the 1A stem like the one I have, had both orange and black paint - orange in the side millings, and black in the narrower millings near the top of the stem (I was lucky to find a couple of pics that show this clearly) - and lastly, that yellow was never used to fill in the milling in either stem or post (I have no idea why I thought yellow was one of the colors used).
So the way I'm going to paint them is black for the post, and orange and black for the stem.
Tam, I don't recall ever seeing that photo, sounds interesting.

In fact, I have a feeling the color wasn't always the same for the stem and post - I seem to recall seeing photos showing the post filled in black while the stem was filled in orange or yellow.
