1. Aluminum against aluminum is likely to seize. 2. An aluminum wedge would be strong enough, but the thread may eventually strip. 3. Sheldon mentioned the ribs. These would be less effective with an aluminum wedge.

It should not be too hard to make one. You don't need (or really want) the ribs. You can also get titanium expander bolts, which are very light. Somebody gave me one. It almost feels as light as aluminum, but doesn't fit anything I have.
