I read somewhere that bolting the front caliper to the back of the fork crown provides the same aero benefit as double disk wheels, while sticking the shift levers above the downtube is equivalent to adding an aero handlebar. Toss in the squished frame tubes and the ground-down crank arms and I'd put this on-topic Benotto up against anything seen in the 2006 T d F prolog.
Okay maybe not, but I do love early 80's aero gear. So naive. If ever there was a cycling example of that phrase I hate, "thinking within the box," this stuff is it. The vast majority of the small aero benefit to this sort of bike lies in the skinny tires and 24-hole wheels, and that stuff was standard fare well before the early 80's, if I'm not mistaken.
