Subject: [CR]Macleans project-restore or refurbish?

Hello list members,

Thanks to everyone who provided me with input about the age and history of the Macleans company and my bike in particular (http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m73/N_Goe/). As I begin the process of cleaning up this bike, I am faced with two questions, and would like to ask your opinion on them.

First of all, the frame. Because of the pervasive rust on the lower half of the frame and fork, I am inclined to have them repainted, not only for the looks, but also to protect against further damage. The previous owner told me that his father had had the bike 'resprayed' before giving it to him, so it's possible that much of the paint is not original anyway. However, if the frame is of historical significance and rare, then maybe I should simply stabilize the rust and sealing the bare metal with a wax or clear coat. I'd appreciate your opinion on this question.

Secondly, the components. I am considering whether to remove the all of the 50s era components and replace them with period correct 30s kit, or simply replace the current derailleurs (Shimano) with 50s era Campy to make the bike more consistent, and enjoy it as an 'upgraded classic'. Again, I would be interested in hearing your opinion on this.

Ultimately, I want to be able to enjoy riding this bike (it will not simply hang on my wall!), so any decision I make will take this into account . Riding will probably entail only weekend and evening touring.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Sincerely,

Neil Goedhuis
