The dye penetrant method is pretty cheap and easy. I've found it to be quite useful, though I am not any kind of expert on testing for cracks. Haven't bought a kit in 15 years, so I don't have any sources to recommend, but I know it is easy to find. Apologies if this has been mentioned already.

If you try it for the first time, the main thing is to follow the directions very precisely, including very thorough cleaning before starting - failure to do so may result in false positives or false negatives, depending on where you screwed up.
