I missed the original post but Ken Craven's road bike in 1964 was an E.G. Bates. Of course he normally raced ont cog so his R/T bike may well have been a Holdsworth. I have been doing some ferreting about Allins of Croydon and have caused much hilarity by repeating the assertion from the CR site that Ching Allin was Chinese. I am assured that in the 1940s there was only one Chinese living south of the Thames and he ran a laundry. I have been told Ching was given that nickname because he rode cycle speedway which doesn't make any sense either. Incidentally Chris Davies who has the livetime cycling mileage record (approx 985,000 miles) rides an Allin. he says they are reliable but he's had to replace the block twice and the chain four times which he is not too pleased about!
