Sorry for being late to the party, but I haven't seen the answer that occurs to me mentioned yet (at least not so explicitly stated). My first few bicycles had kickstands, as I suspect many of ours did. As my uncle owned a bike shop and didn't take kindly to me just dumping the bike that he had given me down on the ground, I used the kickstand. Being quite eager to commence riding, who would raise their kickstand, then waste several precious seconds of cycling time to walk around to the other side of the bike before mounting it? Not I!

As nearly all my bikes these days are on topic, and without kickstands, I could have changed this habit if I were inclined, but being right handed (right dominant), the habit is further reinforced.
