Subject: [CR]Observation regarding Shimano Dyna-Drive pedals

I picked up a nice set of Dura Ace AX Dyna Drive pedals at last weekend's Trexlertown swap. I have noticed in the past that there are two distinct versions of the Dura Ace DD pedal. The earlier Dura Ace EX DD is wider and more crudely finished, while the AX DD pedal is more compact and has a more tidy finish. The set I picked up on Saturday appear to be a third vesion, presumably later than the AX units I've seen in the past. On this version there is a steel piece near the bearing and the main body of the pedal appears to be swaged onto the steel piece. It leads me to wonder if the all-alloy version had a tendency to fail in the area that was replaced with steel. Does anybody remember hearing about this? Fat chance I suppose, as this was not a pedal setup that many people used. In any case, I thought the AX fans in this group (I know there are at least a couple of you) would be interested to know that there are a few different versions of Dura Ace DD pedals.
