I'm surprised that Berthet only covered 48.604kms with this amount of streamlining, perhaps he was under geared! With a big enough gear I would expect 60kms on this contraption.
Also, perhaps this bike was the inspiration for the SPUTNIK bike, built by Johnny Berry and raced at Fallowfield in the late 50's/early 60's (photos of the Sputnik can be found on the Manchester Wheelers page at http://www.wheelers.org under the club history page)
