Sixty-Nine Years Ago...
Frenchman Albert Marquet sets the automobile-paced speed record of 139.902 kph (85.3 mph) in Los Angeles, California. Pacing automobile is a 1937 Cord with metal box mounted well behind the rear bumper, and fabric tucked-into the rear door and attached along the fender to blend the contours between automobile and box. Note the extended exhaust pipe. Article says that Marquet was living in New York at the time, but I haven't been able to find any other information. Anyone else? From "Le Miroir des Sports" No.971, 5 October 1937.
