Doug, Thanks for you input on this one. I didn't mention young riders on at all on thisone. You quite rightly say that a lot of the youngsters back then were either a[apprentices, learners or in low paid jobs. I was specifically talking about the adult clubmen who did have two or three bikes. Please do not make us out as paupers I know you possibly did a seven year apprenticeship like me and only earned Jack S whilst doing ity but as soon as we banged out like many tradesman we earned codgels. How could Claud, Les, Stuart and the likes of Charles Noble (I believe your local emporium) charge £40.00+ for a bike in the late 40's and early 50's if everyone was skint? Its a myth this one bike thing. Yes club schoolboys and teenagers on poor pay but the rest of us most definitely know. I was paying 7/6 for bed and breakfast at the many cycling time trial digs in the 50's hardly a pauper without a pot!
