Well, one has to start somewhere, and often the best way to learn something is to ask someone who knows. But I do think that if one reads the list regularly it quickly becomes clear what bikes most of the regular CR contributors are most knowledgeable about, as in the example of Peter and Hetchins. And one can then email that person offlist. I've had a number of people ask me offlist about pricing of French bikes, and I always try to give them my best guess. Never had anyone ask me about Masi prices, as it is very obvious that I'm NOT the expert on them.

"What's it worth" questions are sort of not cool on the CR.

To quote from the Rules: "5. The CR list is for enthusiasts to share and appreciate their hobby, conversely it is NOT to be used to maximize the selling prices of vintage bikes or parts. "What is my X worth?" is an unwelcome question. Please search online auctions such as eBay for that information."

I realize that you may be deciding whether or not to buy that bike, but I would put forward that if you don't already know what it's worth to you, you shouldn't be buying it. If you are wanting to buy it and need to know what it is worth to resell it, again, maybe you shouldn't be buying it either until you know the market.

Re: "the market", I think E-Richie's recent selling of that superb Masi proves the "market" is more of a moving target...There are no absolutes and what I might value it is way different from someone else.

Maybe a discussion of the relative merits of that particular Hetchins, such as; rarity, year of manufacture, which craft house made it, what condition it's in, size, color, equipment, without attaching a dollar value would be better for everyone.

In regards to the Hetchins model Italia... I might answer that with a question; "What are Hetchins valued most for?" It's usually the fancy, elaborate lugs. The Italia has very plain lugs ("Italian style") That would be a few deductions on the collectible scale. Next feature of desirability would be curly stays... Got?

Etc., etc, you get the point...

Maybe the famous HetchinsPete, Peter Naimann will chime in on this, or answer off list with his idea of $ value.

Could any of you help me out with a guesstimate as to the market value of a Hetchins Italia in average used condition?

Off-list replies are most appreciated.
