Steve might not be talking about racing. If a bike's chainstays are long enough, the big-big and small-small combinations can work fine, particularly with a nice flexible chain. Plenty of bikes for loaded touring have very long chainstays, and some of the nicest on-topic touring bikes had on-topic Campy Triple cranksets.
