I do not recall owing you money. If I do, please let me know, and I will pay you in full, plus interest. I remember that we swapped the subscription as partial payment for a cycling jersey you were selling. That was agreed upon before the deal was concluded and before you sent the jersey.

You were very complimentary of the magazine at first. You also asked me for help finding a job for your wife in translating, and I gave her some contacts with an agency.

It appears that your opinion of me and Bicycle Quarterly soured when a number of people (including you and me) were offered two bikes, and I bought them before anybody else had a chance. You accused me of acting unethically then, saying that we should have split the bikes among the two of us. (I wonder what we should have done with the others who also were offered the bikes, and who would have got the nice one and who the one with the broken frame?)

There also was an article VBQ published about the first Campagnolo Gran Sport derailleurs, co-written by a Japanese collector. I believe a derailleur you had sold was found to have incorrect, later pulleys based on the article, but I believe the situation was resolved amicably. (Neither the sale nor the dispute involved me.)

It is sad to me that these events appear to have clouded your opinion of me in such a negative way, to the point where you won't even talk to me in the elevator at the Cirque. As I said before, if you find errors or omissions in Bicycle Quarterly, please let me know, as I do publish corrections and additions.

I apologize for airing this in "Dale's living room," but if we both are to continue on this forum, it might be necessary to clear this up. -- Jan Heine Editor Bicycle Quarterly 140 Lakeside Ave #C Seattle WA 98122 http://www.bikequarterly.com
