Subject: [CR]Re: Classicrendezvous Digest, Vol 47, Issue 95: Creaks, Noises

First, start at the drivetrain: Chainring bolts tight? Crankarm bolts properly torqued? Is the taper in the crank arms worn out? Pedals tight? Are the rivets that hold your pedal cages to the pedal body secure? (this a fairly common malady; fix by center-punching the rivets) Loose toe-clip bolts? If it's a cottered crank, are the cotters tight? Is the chain line correct, and is the chain the same width as the cog & chainring (1/8th chain on 3/32 cogs makes all sorts of wierd noises!) Finally, is the stem/bar combination compatible? Try greasing the quill & the clamp- all sorts of noises can emanate from this area, due to fretting & corrosion- is the quill the right diameter for the steerer tube? Is your seat clamp/cradle assembly tight? If you have a leather saddle, the rivets in these can also make all sorts of noise. Hope I have been of some help; all of the above are preferable to cracked or broken frame!

Dear List Members :

I'm asking for your experienced advice in order to trace and stop some annoying craking sounds, produce in my vintage track bike, during aceleration , when I apply full power . I experience some of this sounds in the past with another bikes but they were very minor..... I 'm using a 3/32 " campagnolo chainring , aluminum handle-bar and pedals with the old school toe-clip system. Needless to say I already inspect the frame for any fisures or cracks and every thing looks ok. Any sugestions about how to stop " the screamer...."? Thank you all

Hey all,

I submit myself to the mercies of the various and sundry folk of CR to help hunt down some pantographed bits for two fine Italians, a De Rosa and a Pinarello. Specifically I'm looking for stems and seatposts for either one, preferably around the 110-120 (stem) and 26.8 (De Rosa) and 27.2 (Pinarello) range. Any help would be gratefully accepted.

On another note, I'm also hunting for a pair of (mildly OT ;) C-Record 32h /front/ high-flange hubs, either quick release OR track. I've a pair of rear 32h C Record track hubs but no mates, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

The starting point for all these sorts of noises is to lubricate/grease every interface you can think of.

I went through some 6 months of trying to locate a creak on my OT Giant TCR Composite with Record 10 this year. I changed the bottom bracket, headset, greased everything I could think of. The noise would only happen when standing for hills or sprinting. The culprit was the front wheel skewer. You could have some movement at the axle nuts (assuming Campy nuts with the built in washers)for example. Start lubing and see if you can find it.

I had a similar experience with my beloved old Benotto; hard to track down creak under full pedal power.

I think that the year on this is pretty close. I have a 1976 or 77 Super that is very similar, the exception is that my bike has braze ons on the top tube for the brake cable housing, which I think came in around 1977. The un-stamped fluted seat stays combined with Colnago stamps under the clovers on the fork crown put this at about 1976 or so, I think.

My super has a chrome rear triangle and chrome fork and I think it is chromed under the painted areas. So, I'm guessing that the E-bay bike may have been stripped of whatever paint was on it originally. Interestingly, some of the mid to late '70's bikes, especially those sold in Europe, seemed to have a higher level of finish, ie. chromed stays, forks, drop outs, etc. than the U.S. export bikes, which were much more plain. I do think the components on the E-bay bike are original, with the exception of the wheels, stem, and seat.

I haven't looked back at the Colnago time line info that was recently posted for comparison with this bike's claimed vintage. But I think a 1976 or so vintage would not contradict the information that was presented on the list.

I too made a genuine mistake only a few weeks ago by sending a fautly bike part to a fellow lister in the States. I was'nt aware at the time of sending to the fact that anything was wrong with it . I accepted his observations which I had obviously overlooked and apologised for my error. I was not able to send him a duplicate so I refunded his costs.

I had no insulting or heated mail, but just the opposite. He wrote back and told me he fully understood and accepted it could happen to anyone. At no time during did I feel he was complaining but his concern had this gone to someone who did'nt detect the fault it could have been more complicated.

I will be more careful in the future and double check , nothing like this has happened to me before and I'm only grateful this situation was resolved in amicable way.

Check your handlebar stem - tho' this wasn't difficult for me to find. Mine was tight but creaked until I removed it (quill type) cleaned, lubed and re-installed. Ian Lindridge Cottage Grove Minnesota

Great Jersey! Would we have a choice of Red, or Antique Gold embroidery? Or is it whichever color wins the survey? I love the Red, not too hot for the Antique Gold.

Also, when would you need a check? Did I read January order, April delivery? Nice $15 discount option. Would it be possible to order long sleeve?

All of this advice has been excellent, here are a couple of fixes of sounds that have cropped up on my fixie that have not been covered yet,

check the chainwheel bolts and both crank arms. putting back pressure on the cranks is not considered pleasant to both of these mechanical fixtures. I check mine every couple of weeks. check for a sticking link in the chain. this will be accentuated with a

chainline that is not spot on. a slight clattering sound indicates (to me) the need of a lubricant renewal.
