Subject: [CR]Cyclo Benelux Mark 7 Five Speed?

"The box says it is for 1/4" or 3/8" chains (me-thinks: I'm composing this

from memory) and I didn't know what this meant - but, now, I believe that when it is used with a narrower chain and a casette with more closely-spaced cogs it can handle 5 speeds?

My guess is that the Raleigh Record Ace of the 50s had the narrower chain

and the appropriate five-speed casette?

Yes, Alan that is what I am thinking too since I've yet to see one of thes e specifically marked "five speed". So c. 1957 when the RRA Moderne was introduced, they just put a more modern closer spaced five-speed freewheel , used the 3/32 chain and found it worked? Sounds too simple to have anyth ing to do with restoring classic lightweights but it would sure be swell if it

were! And it certainly is easier finding a five-speed freewheel nowadays than a four-speed. What apparently didn't work is using a front deraille ur with the Mark 7 and getting 10 speeds as Raleigh's Lenton Grand Prix with this set up was always listed as eight speeds. The RRA Moderne was never

offered with a front derailleur or double chainring.
