The Buffalo can really look like it has a faint suede texture to it - if you don't compare side-to-side it is hard to tell the difference. Just went into my NOS stash and indeed the 3L is Buffalo and the 2 is the more defined suede. The drawback to the 2 is that it seems like the writing tends fade off the suede saddles faster than the true Buffalo ones. That is just a weak hunch though.

I'm betting that John has the true Buffalo and that is the one to have.

List,

Mike Kone wrote in reference to my ad below:

“Isn't 3L the Buffalo? That is more desirable than the Suede and is perhaps the most valuable of the bunch. The suede I believe is number 2 and the 4 is the smooth leather (these numbers all refer to the padded varieties only). Also, there the old logo saddles typically have 2 versions - one with the writing in silver (later) and those with writing in yellow (earlier). But could someone clarify what the L stands for - I think I knew years ago and it fell out of my brain.”

I don’t know if the 3L was the Buffalo but mine has that sticker and she’s a very, very fine suede. Hey, she could be Buffalo that has a slight suede finish. She’s silver logo; I have no idea when they changed from the yellow but if pushed I’d say very loosely around 1978. The reason why I don’t tilt my head sideways any more is cause everything will fall out.
