RE: Garlatti

I proudly purchased a new Garlatti Parma in 1971. At the time it was marketed to be just a little cheaper than the Bottecchia. As previously mentioned, the cost savings were in the entry level cottered steel chainset and plastic Freccia d'Oro saddle. I can confirm that the Shimano bits came later than 1971. In 1971 they were fitting high-flange 3-piece Gnutti hubs to those steel rims (at least the ones sold in New Orleans). I have personally put over 30k miles on this machine, and it continues to serve me as my first-choice daily rider today. I think the world of this lively frame. The fork is wonderfully matched. It was a champ through the 90's as a Shimano 600/Deore XT triple. It's certainly a dear old friend today as a Nuovo Record/Brooks/Module4 machine.

I could never recommend getting excited about a Valentino rear derailleur. That was the first bit of the kit to self-destruct. If my original paint job was any indicator, get out your catcher's mitt to collect those decals as they leap off the frame. Having said that, the chrome has remained perfect for 35 years. It has shown no tendency to rust. For $300 as a time-warp machine, I would consider it a bargain.
