This was done routinely in the US when English thread first became dominant, although I still resist doing it. The truth is, I think a lot of French cranks got "tapped" just by someone who didn't know the difference forcing an English pedal into them. If they were lucky enough to do this without crossthreading them, it often worked out OK.

French: 14 mm x 1.25 (.551" x 20.32 TPI)

The pitch doesn't quite match, hence my emphasis is on reliability. I'm considering this for a rider.
