Regardless the cause, shouting obscenities at officials makes the sport look bad in the eyes of the public, especially in a place like Little Rock, where much of the crowd won't understand the sport very well anyway. And lets's be serious, how many top athletes in any sport would get irate over an injustice to some other rider after they themselves just won the event? Simply doesn't happen. Top athletes are almost by necessity egomaniacs, but some manage to control their egos and tempers, at least in public. The Stetinas did not that day. Now maybe they were just having a bad day, and perhaps their conduct was normally exemplary, but someone seeing them in person only on that occasion would have retained the same unfavorable image I have.

I've personally never been a great fan of US racing, and the main reason is the insufferable and totally unjustified arrogance of all too many of the guys who manage to win a few US criteriums. Too many of these guys think they are some sort of superstar, when in truth they couldn't even make a top Europen amateur team, let alone dream of being even a domestique on a European pro team. I'd much prefer to see US cycling concentrate on broad participation and racing for the love of the sport, and let the prima donnas go try their luck in Europe, where it will quickly be seen if they have any talent to back up their attitude.

Over something? Maybe they were upset with safety or whatever, maybe they were fighting for you, us, the racers? Maybe it really was positive -who really knows? Derek Willburn Long Beach, CA USA
