I would tend to agree. Even 50-odd years ago, when I started cycling in England, large flange hubs were considered "bling" (50 years before kids invented the word). I only have them on my old track bike because that's what it came with and it just looks "right".

BTW, why is it that the English have always called them large flange (or wide flange) and small flange, and the Americans call them high flange and low flange? Re-inventing the wheel?
