Norris said if you did 240 miles in a 12.hour race in 1954, you must have been far short of the national competition record ! This is not correct the 240 TT mile barrier were both broken on the same day 18th August 1935. In Scotland by J.G.Bone 244.37 miles of the Glasgow United C.C. riding in a West Scotland T.T.A. event. In England by M.Clarke Barnsley R.C 240.5 miles in a East Mids R.R.A. The R.R.A competion record for over 240 miles in 12 hours was taken by Jack Rositier Century R.C. in 1926 with 242 miles riding a Selbach. Did Ron Kitching of the Yorkshire R.C. ever better 250 miles? I have him down as doing 232.375m in the 1941 North Road 12 which he won and 233.750 in the same event in 1942 again the winner. I beleive he did a 244 in a Teeside 12 on his beloved Carlton? Can you tell me please Norris. Finally I have just purchased a book from ebay on the history of the Southern Wheelers. Under the 1954 club PBT there is an entry for D.Smith 231 3/8 miles is this the same Doug Smith of the CR list that Norris mentions and did he ever get his 12 hour certificate for doing evens? Where they given back then for achieving this feat?
