I've found carburetor (carburettor) cleaner works fast. I happened to have a gallon can of it with a strainer for the parts, but the spray can cleaner works just as well. Any auto parts store. Suggest protective gloves as it's strong stuff. I had a couple of old Raleighs with well worn SA AW 3 speed hubs. It was cheaper for me to buy NOS SA AW hubs on ebay, remove clean and lube the innards, and use them in my wheel hub. The oil in the NOS hubs had oxidized to become like varnish. Saved time from pouring over parts lists and replacing individual parts. All parts except the hub shell are now new. There seems to be quite a few NOS SA hubs periodically popping up on ebay. The original hubs on the Raleighs had (part HSA 107, 5-3/4in., 146mm mark I) axles with gear indicators (Part HSA 125). One I got was for a Schwinn and had a longer (Part HSA 370, 6-13/32in.,163mm mark II) axle which required a different gear indicator chain (Part HSA 126) for proper gear adjustment. Also found on ebay. I've also seen the short 5-3/4 axle called code # K601 Z, and the longer 6-1/4 axle called code # K601 AZ, with the respective indicators short K504Z and longer K504 AZ. Hope this makes it easier for someone. If I've got any of this information wrong, please correct me.
