Thanks Fred for the tip about being able to play this Region 2 DVD on a computer. I've just tried the DVD that I bought from a French supermarket on my computer and it worked a treat.
There are pages of refences to the film on Google, including a review on MSM movies.
I found that http://www.amazon.com has a couple of copies at $22.99..but there
is a lead to a French DVD seller who will sell worldwide. This company,
like Amazon, also does S/H editions. there are several copies available
from as little as 3.40 euros and 6.99 euros.

I have read quite a few of the French and Belgian reviews and it appears that much of the film was actually based loosely on real events tied in and around the racing career of Mer ckx ie some of the events in which he rode. The historic loser in the film does actually get to ride the Tour de France, and achieved fame and populat aclaim as the lanterne rouge.
