I agree on the digest being a waste of time. The volume of data is the same as the email list, but finding and replying to individual posts is more difficult and from time to time people forget to trim the rest of the digest or change the Subject when replying.

I've used mailing lists for years and like them. Many youngsters, newer to the Internet, with fast connections and powerful computers, hate lists and prefer web forums. I belong to one list where there was a lot of pressure to switch to a web forum from these people and it eventually happened, but using FUD Forum software, so the email list function could be retained for those who prefered it. There is a point at which the volume of messages gets so large that only those with a lot of time on their hands can keep up. That's where the web forum format becomes more useful. Ideally, this list would work really well as a web forum, even to the point where real names and locations could be automatically enforced. However, there's no doubt the expense of running such a forum would be extermely high compared to the lists. In the meantime, the searchable archives offer the same or better search function as a forum. I don't believe I've come across another mailing list that has the search capability of bikelist.org
