Subject: [CR]Patina (aka rust) management question

When you get a bike with rust speckles in the paint all over the frame, and you don't want to repaint, what do you apply to halt the rust? I have a friend who deals in antiques and he says to rub motor over the rust speckled, painted metal. Does this make sense? Or does motor oil have solvents in it that would wreck the paint on a bicycle? If not motor oil, what then? Don Wilson Los Olivos, CA
