I think that sometimes it's just art. I'm fond of, and fascinated by, the "drillium" craze and it's various manifestations. Like John, I too question the reliability of highly modified and relieved parts. That said, I still believe that there are more reasonable examples, and extreme examples. I find the brake calipers very interesting, and suspect that they would prove to be not significantly less reliable that stock calipers.

Some "drillium" examples obviously sacrifice reliability for "art". The N-Record derailleur I have is a classic example:

I don't know who did this one, but it appears obvious that creativity overcame reliability in the process. Doesn't make it any less interesting, at least to me. If there is a "drillium" contest for rear derailleurs, this one might be hard to beat.
