Yes, Jason, there is no Santa Claus: Hi-E hubs are basically, according to Hi-E literature, held together by the spokes. However, I believe that they use reasonably standard cartridge bearings. I have some Hi-E literature still (I don't know why). It says, "Hub-ends, adapters, and bearings are pressed in place and may be removed in a similar manner." I just played with a spare, and my vise and hammer did not seem to be an adequate surrogate for a press and jig. But, I didn't try warming the hub end, etc. But, it was fun to go through Harlan's old product sheets from the late 70s and early 80s.

Has anyone actually disassembled a Hi-E hub? I have one that needs service. I have heard that these hubs need to be disassembled to change the bearings. I think the deal is that the flanges are press fit onto the center tube and this all needs to come apart and the bearings pushed out of the flanges from the outside.

If anyone has first hand knowledge on servicing Hi-E hubs, please let me know.

Sincerely,
