I have an old Atala 3-speed that I am trying to re-assemble. I took it apart many years ago with the intention of upgrading it. I liked the chrome-plated lugwork, and although I realized the tubing was ordinary Hi-ten, I thought it would make a nice commuter type bike. As it turned out, I could not remove the fixed cup on the bottom bracket, so I put it aside. Since then I have become more interested in keeping old bikes as original as possible, but therein lies the delemma. I believe I have found the correct wheels - 27X1+1/8 steel rims, and a Torpedo 3-speed hub, the handlebars with brake levers and shifter, and I have the fenders, chain guard and crankset, but no saddle, seat post, or brakes. I would like to find out what seat it might have come with, what kind of brakes, and it's approximate age.
I posted some pictures of it on my Webshots page, http://community.webshots.com/
The shifter is broken and missing parts, and I doubt if I could find another, but I have an alloy 3-speed Sturmey hub, so I could go the upgrade route starting with that. I would appreciate any opinions and/or information. Thanks.
