I used to subscribe to this practice of bending brake arms to eliminate brake squeal. It always scared me. I'm not a believer in wailing on any part, whether auto or bike. (For the record, I tap tap tapped the headset races in on the last bike rebuild. I was then taken to the woodshed for it by more sophisticated list members.) In recent years, I discovered that toe in can be created by by filing the back edges of the brake blocks. I also am a fan of using Nashbar (yikes!) replacement brake blocks. They never squeal or shudder no matter what brakes I use them on (Modolo, Campy, Suntour, Shimano). They are dirt cheap and the descriptive letters can be rubbed off with a piece of steel wool so they appear to be universal if not original. I am so tired of trying to find replacement pads to work with classic brakes. Half the time they squeal, grab or don't fit right anyway. Sometimes they pull out of the holders or leave black marks on the rims. Until someone from the list knocks on my door and demands my immediate arrest, I'll continue to save the original, hard as rocks pads and use the Nashbars, and never again will I take adjustable wrench to brake arm. It's just not necessary.
