Hello Steve..you are a lucky chap to find a James Fothergill frame!
As you state Fothergill was a Liverpool-based builder, along with several o thers, but he was one of the less well known unfortunately.
I don't know exactly when he started building - I suspect it was in the 40s ..but he was producing some elegant frames in the 50s and 60s. I recall spe aking to him in the late 70s at a time when he was considering starting a f rame shop again, but that never happened because his builder..who had been relegated to mending bikes, left to go and build cars at the Ford plant&nbs p; at Speke,outside LIverpool. What a loss to the lightweight cycle trade.
