Fifty-Three Years Ago...
Cyclocross in 1954

Three-time World Cyclocross Champion (1951-1952-1953) Roger Rondeaux (Terrot) leads the way up a climb - note the buildings below - at the 1954 Dreux Cyclo Cross-Pédestre. Behind him, André Dufraisse (also sponsored by Terrot) follows step-for-step on his way to second place. Dufraisse would go on to win the World Championships in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, and 1958. Two riders with eight consecutive Rainbow Jerseys between them!
Nice clear view shows the knobby tread on Rondeaux's rear tire, while
the other tires appear to have smoother treads. Note the use of
side-pull brakes, and what might be a hole drilled through Rondeaux's
stem for cable routing (perhaps borrowed from a bike with cantilevers
brakes?). Bare-metal MAFAC brake lever bodies look cold and slippery to
me - other bikes in the race are shown with half-hoods.
