It was more than that; it was intended to speed up wheel changes during a race. The rider could shift onto the portacatena while pulling in to the mechanics, the machanic would quickly slide the old wheel out, pop the new wheel in and send the rider on his way. The rider would then shift off the portacatena and ride off.
