These have me stumped. However, I don't think they're the "S" brakes. I believe those had the arms turned with the slots for the brake blocks facing each other - like Weinmann and Universal - a more simple and therefore cheaper design - which I thought was the intention of that model. The photos are not very good, but what appears to be black plastic (rather than red) bushings says 1980s to me. And, like RSB said, certainly a lower grade model.

Tom,

Those are decidedly NOT any variation of MAFAC Competition calipers as there

are simply far too many detail differences (...straddle cable wires,

straddle cable end fittings, cable receptors, left versus right side

release, center bolt mounting configuration, shape of the arms themselves,

and obviously the model marking or lack of same). That said, I am hard

pressed to tell you with absolute authority just exactly what model of

caliper these might be other than to say that they would have assuredly been

much further down on the MAFAC food-chain, so to speak. If I had to hazard

a guess, I would be inclined to believe that these might be a pair of very

late model "S" centerpull brakes with their shoes and pads having been

upgraded to larger four nub "Racer" units as opposed to the original three

nub versions (...those pieces being easily interchangeable between the

respective models and besides, the two sets of shoes and pads, front and

back, do not even match on the eBay example, which would strongly suggest

that at least one pair are replacement units).

If you would care to further research some of the finer details regarding

various MAFAC offerings, you are encouraged to follow this link:
