From a practical perspective, I agree with those who advised the “the correct length is what fits so, make it fit”. No arguement here.

My inquiry issued from two concerns. 1) My lack of experience with the varieties of drop-outs and wishing to avoid future problems. I thought it prudent to consult the seasoned wisdom of the list. What works in the configuration at hand may not work in other configurations. 2) Interest of style, proper procedure and “spec”. As long as I had the hub disassembled, and time is not critical, I may as well practice and apply the best technique and standards. Ten years from now some hobbyist – just as fanatic as we – will open that hub and I would like the person to feel assured and say to himself “Geeze, whoever sure did nice work.”
