All: I have just joined this group and am a little unsure how to proceed here and thus I sincerely hope I do not misstep. The bike I have used for the last 30 years (since 1977) - a custom frame (handmade by John Padgett) built for a 6'5' 240 pound Orangutan that previously pretzeled numerous 36 spoke rims, finally needs new 40 spoke, 27" by 20 silver rims. I recently discovered cracks around many of the spoke holes. The wheels were built on 40 spoke Phil Wood hubs which are currently having new bearings pressed in. I have used this bike daily for this period to commute to and from work, for touring and competition, and in recent years for 20 mile rides every day before work. You can not imagine the withdrawl symptoms one undergoes having such a vital part of your anatomy non-functional. Does anyone know of or have a source of such rims? I would like three.

Hmm, no idea who built it, though the fastback with the pinchbolt integrated is similar to TS Isaac's. I also have seen a few done that way by Glenn Erickson in the early 80s. Both of those worthy builders had the bolt head on the right side of the bike, not the left as in this picture.

Do we know what wheel size it is made for? Certainly something small - 650c or smaller?

Tapering the lug edges into the tubes that way is not pleasing to my eye, and can result in weakening the frame if not done right. Without knowing who built it I'm not sure I'd want to take it on faith that it was done right. Look for any hint of thinning the tubes at the lug edges where they have been feathered in - but the effect may be difficult to detect by eye while still being enough to cause a structural concern. Have it inspected by a good framebuilder if possible.

On the plus side, anyone small enough to ride a 44 with a 46 TT is probably a light rider, and most frames are overbuilt for people this size.

This would explain why I have trouble telling a 70's PX10 from a UO-8! ; )

Hi Hannah!

Does this title refer to the lugs on the bikes to be displayed?

(That's supposed to be a joke! I assume that must refer to a sponsor?)

In any case, that sounds like a neat idea and a great added interest for your event ... Can you tell us the projected date for this? Also, for those of us in other parts of the world, where is Sonoma? North, south, near...?

Dear All,

For the past three years the Infineon Cougar Mountain Classic (downhill, cross country and road race) held at Infineon Raceway in beautiful Sonoma California has hosted a Vintage Bike Concourse to promote and celebrate this festival of cycling. In the past, local efforts have supported this feature of the event and it has proven a favorite for both athletes and spectators alike.

This year we are taking the concourse one step further with the insight, inventory and involvement of vintage cycling experts like you. We are interested in finding passionate, knowledgeable groups to come to Sonoma with energy, bikes and knowledge to help host the event and have a great time celebrating cycling of yesterday and today. We will also have a bike swap close by and would love to include cycling art and exhibitions of cycling memorabilia.

I look forward to hearing any thoughts or ideas for this years Supercuts Vintage Concourse so please feel free to contact me if you are interested in learning more or send this message along if know someone you think might be interested. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Dale,

Glad to hear it is of interest, I am really excited about it. The event is held July 6th through 8th and Sonoma is about 45 minutes east of San Francisco in Northern California. We are in the heart of the wine valley, but very close to everything...4 hours from Tahoe, 1 hour plus to Sacramento, San Jose is about 1.5 hour's away. My be just the right timing to get away for the holiday weekend.

Speaking of lug, another thing I am trying to arrange is having a having a frame builder at the event who is on property building frames so that the spectators get a chance to see how a frame is put together. I know logistics might be tough, but I am working on it. And the requested style has been a lug frame.

Great to hear from you!

I know that Mike at Velo does beautiful work and I have already used him twice for my Motos but I just keep acquiring MORE that need restoring. Since the originals were screen printed (or so I'm told), how hard could it be? I'll find out, as I have solicited opinions from a lot of screen print kit makers. One comeback suggested that a pressure sensitive vinyl MASK could be applied, sprayed, allowed to dry some, then removed. Mike could certainly make masks, in fact, at some stage, he already does, right? For screen printing purposes, Mike's transfers could serve as masters. I know that Billy Rounds says my middle name is anal-retentive, but, hey, why not get as authentic as possible ESPECIALLY for the 'New M'?

The Redcay shown at the below link was mine, but I sold it. When Michael Jo hnson of Wheelfine Imports in NJ painted it for me, he told me that very few Redcays were originally painted with two colors. Michael was an original p ainter for Jim Redcay. Dennis offered two with two colors this morning. An d, while there are a few modern touches, I'm very appreciative of how Dennis built them. I own two Redcays now and if the stars and moon align right, I 'll be even with Joe BZ's four by the end of the month. Lou Deeter, Orlan do FL

Great, my size and my bike budget is bust! Oh well, I have four Redc ay's already. Anyway, if someone is thinking of a new classic for spring, these sound like excellent deals. If Redcay put them togethe r, you will also find that the integration and wheels will be very goo d also. One caveat is that Redcay's are true customs so pay attentio n to all the dimensions, especially the top tube, because Jim did ev ery design from scratch based on the customer's needs. Look for rust bubbles under the paint on the top tube also.Joe Bender-ZanoniGreat N otch, NJ----- Original Message -----From: cooper-s Date: Friday, March 2, 2007 10:14 amSubject: [CR]FS -Jim Redcay Custom Bike sTo: Classicrendezvous@bikelist.org> These two exquisitely hand crafted bike are hanging on my walls > as > artwork but could be rid den right off the wall so to speak on > any club > ride. John; Offlist. Glad you're ghaving successful results with Mike, but he's had a Hetchins project I submitted well over a year ago and I cannot even get a return phone, and there are others on the list with the same results. Mike's a good guy but a poor communicator. Least he could do is return calls to folks.

Hello, I am looking for a 26.8mm Nuovo Record seatpost, or a copy of such. Aesthetic condition is not important. For copies, the spacing of the two bolts must be near that of a Nuovo post, as this will be used with a Joe Breeze double-rail Brooks saddle sandwich plate. Apologies to the list for publishing onlist as I've done before. I meant my comments on Mike at Velographics to be offlist, but my comments on his progress with my project for Pre-war Hetchins transfers still stand. I've left a few messages for Mike at Velo in recent weeks after months of not wanting to pressure him as I knew from discussions with him of his production delays and search for a new printer. Mike's work from all I've heard is top quality, & I'd just like to witness it myself.

Finally got ahold of Mike at Velographics. I didn't brow beat him for miscommunications, as that's not my style, but just inquired as to what happened to my project. He quickly found my file, and for some reason felt it had been completed. Not sure why he thought that, but that's not my point.

He apologized for not following up with me, and completing the project as planned. To almost quote Mike, my project slipped through the cracks and that's the reason for his apology. He's still got record of my art work and will get it to his printer next week for completion.

As for his lack of communication, Mike honestly told me he's extremely busy and tries to answer all emails spending as much as full day and one half each week to the point where it is borderline interfering with his production schedule.
